Obama’s Extended Family: A Security Risk?

President Obama’s family is very large and extends all the way to Africa.  That could very well be a problem going forward for the United States.  Imagine the publicity a terrorist organization would get by grabbing an Obama family member living in Kenya?  Kidnapping the President’s relatives could even be seen as way to give the terrorists leverage .  The security afforded to his relatives overseas seems to be almost nonexistent.

Racial Profiling: Should It Ever Be Okay?

Racial Profiling has become a hot button issue.  Some are quick to say that race should never be used as a factor when it comes to screening for potential threats.  However, should that always be the case?  At what point would you say it is okay?  What if it were possible to eliminate 100% of the threats out there by using racial profiling, would you be in favor of it then?  What if racial profiling could save lives?

Often people are in favor of profiling when it doesn’t affect them.   It’s difficult to put ourselves in their shoes and feel as they do when someone else is being discriminated.   Take for example the Arab population.   The vast majority of Arabs are no threat at all.  However some would argue that since 1983 that the US Embassy Bombing in Beirut, Marine Barracks Bombing in Beirut, The Hijacking of the Achille Lauro, The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, The 1st World Trade Center Bombings, Empire States Building Shootings, 9/11 World Trade Center Attack, Shoe Bomber Richard Reid, and the El Al Ticket Counter Shootings (To name a few) provide a legitimate reason to target Arabs with racial profiling.

Oil Speculation: The Terror Weapon of the Future?

Imagine if a terrorist group or rogue nation ever got together enough money and had the planning ability to manipulate our oil prices using the futures market.  The results could be horrible.  With such a threat you would think that Congress or Law Enforcement would do something but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

Terrorists know that they cannot defeat the United States using conventional weapons.  Explosions and bombs visually impact us when we see the carnage on the news but as is the case many times, it’s the things we don’t see that we should be most worried about.  People like Osama Bin Laden know that they can’t beat us militarily.  The real goal of the bombings they have carried out here in the US is to try to bankrupt the economy.

Terrorism & The Economy

Whenever an act of terror occurs the focus is usually on the human cost and rightly so.  People cannot be replaced while buildings and money can.  However, that doesn’t mean that acts of terror are without an economic cost.  As a matter of fact the economic cost of terror is really what people like Osama Bin Laden are focusing on.

Al Qaeda realizes they can never win a conventional war against the United States.  We have the most high tech military in the world, bar none.  We also have a much larger fighting force.  Al Qaeda realizes all of this and because of it they choose to attack the World Trade Center.  It was a hub for commerce in the world and destroying it cost the US billions of dollars and slowed the economy down.  That is the war Al Queda thinks it can win.  They think they can cause the United States to spend itself into defeat.

To a great extent the current administration is falling right into their trap.  The cost of the war is difficult to estimate but by the time we are done we will have spent between 1-2 Trillion dollars in total.  That’s a lot of zeros.  $1,000,000,000,000.  While the amount of stability the war has brought to the region will be something the future will tell us it’s hard to argue that Al Qaeda hasn’t scored a victory in getting us to spend that kind of money.

To put that in comparison, implimenting universal health care in the United States would have cost us about half that amount or less over the same period of time.  The US can’t continue to fall right into the Bin Laden’s trap.  Al Qaeda knows they can’t win a war of bombs but they can win a war of Dollars.
