Apple, as it is with most of it’s products, has not been very forthcoming with details about it’s expected touchpad device.  Speculation has abounded about the software it will use, the size of it’s screen and it’s other capabilities.  However, to Apple the iPad is all about capturing a new market it has not ventured into very much, that market being books and other written media traditionally delivered to us in hard copy printed form.  To put it more succinctly, the iPad will be the device which launches the iTunes Bookstore.

Without question Apple is certainly an innovator in it’s field. Their designs influence the direction of the entire computer industry to one extent or another. In terms of market share here in the US it has somewhere around 20%. That’s respectable but Apple’s current business strategy has effectively capped its growth. This will become more and more apparent as the US economy continues to decline.

Why? Well because Apple does not compete in the low budget computer market place. Their cheapest offering, the Mac Mini, retails for $599. While their cheapest laptop, the Macbook, retails for $999. In comparison, as of this writing, Dell is selling their Inspiron 15 Laptop for $479. While their Inspiron 530 Desktop is selling for $299. Now there are those of you out there saying that the above comparison isn’t fair because the Dell offerings are for less powerful systems but that isn’t the point here. The point is that Dell offers systems at a lower price point, a price point which Apple simply doesn’t offer.

Many of you have heard the good news, Apple has decided that all songs sold via iTunes will be DRM (Digital Rights Management) free.  That means you’ll have more freedom to decide how and where the music you bought is used.  Currently 8-10 million “tunes” are available without any form of DRM.  However, the transition to a completely DRM free music store won’t occur until the end of the quarter.  As of this writing there are still almost 2 million songs containing DRM.  So it is possible to still buy songs which are laden with restrictions.  What does that mean for the average Joe?  Well if you care about having your music DRM free then you may want to wait to make some of your purchases.

In case you missed it a company called Citrix announced it is working on bringing a “Citrix Receiver” to the iPhone. What does that mean to you and me? Well with the Citrix Receiver you would be able to host almost any windows application on your server and have it pop right up on your iPhone. All the horsepower to run the application is provided by your server and the iPhone serves up the visual end of it. This will certainly help Apple penetrate further into the business sector which has been dominated by the RIM Blackberry line up until now.  It also means that the software library for the iPhone could be expanding enourmously through this method.

While remote desktop and VNC implementations have been available for both the iPhone and Blackberry for some time now this new software could be a game changer. Citrix will allow enterprises to put their desktop applications into the palm of their workforces hand… literally. Imagine being able to use the full version of Microsoft Office or your companies proprietary software anytime you need to just by reaching into your pocket.  The possibilities for increasing work force productivity are astounding.
