Apple, as it is with most of it’s products, has not been very forthcoming with details about it’s expected touchpad device.  Speculation has abounded about the software it will use, the size of it’s screen and it’s other capabilities.  However, to Apple the iPad is all about capturing a new market it has not ventured into very much, that market being books and other written media traditionally delivered to us in hard copy printed form.  To put it more succinctly, the iPad will be the device which launches the iTunes Bookstore.

Imagine if you bought a car and then a few months down the road the manufacturer announced that they could turn out new features in your car that would allow it to get better gas mileage.  Turns out they say, that the hardware to improve gas mileage has been in your car all along.  The catch, well you have to pay them to use the hardware you already paid them for.  In a nutshell this is what Apple is planning on doing to it’s iTouch 2G customers.  It turns out the customers who paid for their iTouches will be forced to cough up another $10 dollars if they want to use Bluetooth.  The Bluetooth chip is already built into the phone, Apple just didn’t tell anyone when they were buying it.  Now in order to turn that feature on you will need to pay $10 dollars for an “upgrade”.

Someone forgot to tell Dell that the world’s economy is in a recession.  Dell recently announced a new line of high end luxury laptops known as “Adamo”.  Click here to see the lineup.  The new laptops start at $1,999 for the “Admire” model which feature a 13.4 inch screen, 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo Processor, 2GB of Ram, Windows Vista, and a 128GB Solid state drive.  If you are willing to drop another $700 dollars you can move up to the “Desire” model priced at $2,699.    That extra money will buy you a slightly faster processor, 1.4GHz to be exact.  You’ll also get 4GB of Ram, and Mobile Broadband. Apparently they are counting on your desire for mobile broadband in order to get you to part with all that money.

Apple has announced a 30-Day free trial of its Aperture 2 software.  Available Here. For those of you who don’t know Aperture is Apple’s premiere photo editing and organizing suite.  A full description is Available Here.  The trial is for Intel based Macs as well as selected Power PC machines.  If you are uncertain you can check your compatibility with this program from Apple Available Here.  It’s also important to note that the Free Trial does not include any sample images. Kavmerica.com usually doesn’t review technology but we are going to make an exception here because of the vast economic implications that the new version of Microsoft Windows carries with it. Recently we were able to get a hold of a beta version of the new operating system, Windows 7. It should be noted that some of the problems mentioned below will be fixed before the final version comes out. However, no doubt about it, Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) severely disappointed us.

Our test machine was setup to run NVRAID. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s when the computer uses software to make two or more hard drives appear as they are one disk. That’s where the trouble started, both Windows XP and Vista were able to detect this configuration without any problems, Windows 7 could not. Finally we opted to just do away with NVRAID and install it to a single hard disk. The Installation was rather straight forward after that and seemed to move along quickly.
