Google Android to Threaten Microsoft in the Netbook Market
You may have already heard of the Google Android operating system, it was originally designed to run on modern mobile “smart” phones. However, with the advent of the netbook (small ultra portable laptop like devices) there has been interest in porting Android onto these machines. Why would someone want to run cell phone software on a computer? For starters the software runs very well without much hardware horsepower. Secondly, Android brings with it the well established Google name. Whereas before consumers selected from Microsoft XP or Ubuntu they could very soon be given the choice of choosing between Windows 7 and Google Android.
Google has generated a lot of public good will with its various free offerings such as Google earth, Picasa, and YouTube to name a few. Android could expand its appeal greatly by moving from cell phones into the netbook market. Perhaps most appealing of all is that Android is mostly open source. So unlike the Microsoft offerings, Google Android is free and that results in a cheaper product for the consumer. Being the most price competitive out there certainly doesn’t hurt, especially in this economy.
Microsoft has been hurt in recent years by the poor reception of it’s latest operating system, Windows Vista. In addition, Vista just really doesn’t play well at all with any of the netbook offerings which has resulted in most netbooks being offered with Windows XP. This has allowed for Linux to make make some in roads in the netbook OS market. Android is already being used in the cell phone market place so it makes transitioning easier for consumers. Simply put a consumer would be able to move from their cell phone to their netbook and the operating system would share many of the same features as well as the have the same look and feel. That type of synergy has great appeal to consumers.
The combination of the factors listed above should allow Android to gain a respectable share of the netbook market. Perhaps Microsoft has finally found it’s match in the OS marketplace?
