Sorry Joe, but you fail to understand that as soon as Facebook became a paysite then a new free site would pop up. In an open market, where businesses are free to compete there would be entrepeneurs there to fill the void. This does not happen in markets were bureaucrats and lawmakers hinder the market place with onerous regulations that put the cost of entry out of reach for everyone, but the corporations that are large enough to handle the cost. Corporations send lobbyists to meet with lawmakers for just this reason, and that is how big business works.

If they charge they will not have a lot of users and will not get many hits. Cos if some one new joines facebook they will get a hit. Say 10000 users join facebook a every day. if 1 hit is £1 they will get £10000 a day.
The reference "Pay Site" is looked at very shallowly here.

Lets look at another realistic possibility, shall we?

Its well known now that major Communications and Media Corporations have hinted at the possibility of introducing a "tiered" pricing structure for the Internet.

What will this do?

Simply, you subscribe to different packages that offer different types of "product", such as The Gaming Package, lets say for $10 per month, or The Social Package lets say for $15 per month.

So why is this relevant?

Well, Sites such as Facebook, coupled in a theoretical Social Package, could return the Site a set revenue per month per customer. Meaning that Facebook would gain revenue regardless to whether or not a member/ex-member visits the site.

It is unikely Facebook will revert to a Pay model by itself, but don't dismiss the inevitable! This may be how the rumour started, and in the long term is likely to be true.

On the contrary, facebook would be stupid to become a pay-site because they make millions and millions off of advertisements. Becoming a pay-site would push millions of tight budget users away. Millions more would return to myspace. leaving only the few dedicated users, causing a tremendous loss in appeal and sponsors; ultimately ruining the once juggernaut of a web-site.
