With the S&P 500 trading in the 700 range, it is time to consider some long-term investing ideas that you can buy and forget about for 10 years. We’re not talking about buying investments for the sake of buying investments. Nor are we talking about buying investments just because they’ve been beaten down.

What we are looking at here are 5 long-term themes that you can really sink your teeth into…big, broad themes that will probably impact the world for at least the next 5-10+ years.

The Nuclear Powered Car

Electric cars, or at least the prospect of electric vehicles, seem to be all the rage lately. They make many promises, included shifting us away from a dependence on foreign oil. However, electric cars are an environmental disaster waiting to happen. Electricity does not just come out of thin air, it has to be generated. In the United States nearly 20% of that electricity is generated by Nuclear Power according to the Department of Energy.  The rest of the electricity is generated by fossil fuels such as Coal, Natural Gas, and you guessed it… Oil.  Add to that the fact that all of these electric cars depend on batteries which are composed of highly toxic substances and you end up with a disaster waiting to happen.

Electric Vehicles may be the Next Environmental Disaster

There has been a lot of hype recently about electric cars and how they are going to reduce pollution but as you’ll soon find out that simply isn’t the case.  As a matter of fact, in their current state, electric cars could even lead to worsening the pollution problem.  Electric vehicles are certainly a step in the right direction but they are far from the free ride some people seem to be trying to pass them off as.

Electric cars still need to be charged and there in lies the problem.  That power comes from your local power plant which may generate the power it provides in a number of ways including:  Burning fossil fuels (ie Oil or Coal) , Hydrodynamic, Nuclear, Wind, Solar, Etc.  In the US almost half of the electricity generated comes from coal.  Following that we have Nuclear and Natural gas at around 20% each.  So that electric car you are driving around it is getting roughly 70% of it’s electricity from Coal and Nuclear power.  Suddenly it doesn’t seem like such a “clean” way to get around, right?
